"i’m afraid for the young generation. i’m afraid that they’ll forget what it means to be human. i’m afraid that they’ll no longer find it beautiful that the sun rises and sets without us asking it to do so. i’m afraid that one day my children will wake up for school and there will be no more light at dawn and they won’t even notice, won’t even care. we live in a time of smallness. everything we love has to fit between our palms or else we no longer believe in it. single people cannot hold countries together. no one’s arms are wide enough. we care about the small things, only know how to hold each other and be incredibly and increasingly aware of how we can never melt into one another, can never touch each other the ways that we want to be touched. the world is growing smaller. nowadays, we can fall in love with people we’ve never met. we have the power to hold all of the knowledge in the palm of our hands but we don’t know what to do with it. we are living in a time where our only concern is our own small lives because we can’t afford to care about anything else. scientists are splitting apart molecules. scientists are going to see if other universes are around so that we can take notes on how to be more like them. we know so much and our universe has grown exponentially and thinking about it all is terrifying, so we focus on small things. the white feather that falls as a good luck sign towards the pavement. a hot cup of coffee on a cold monday morning. the simple idea of meeting someone’s eye from across a room and falling devastatingly in love. we focus on small things. the human things. all of what we have been told for ages are important. because if we lose track of those, if we lose track of all the loves and all the life and all the sadness and darkness that we can hold in our palms, then everything would be too much. and so few people these days are willing to let themselves be overwhelmed."
